ANNOUNCEMENTS 

World Health Organization (WHO) renews official relations with IEA
At the 146th session of the World Health Organization, the Director-General and Executive Board decided to maintain official relations between the International Ergonomics Association (IEA) and WHO. Sixty-six professional organizations were recognized as official Non-State Actors. In making the decision, the Executive Board commended the continuing dedication of the IEA in supporting the work of WHO. The approved collaborative project between WHO and IEA is creating a joint document with practical guidelines and case studies in “Applying HFE to Healthcare for Patient Safety” by January 2023. Leading the effort are IEA’s Communication and Public Relations Committee; the Center for Clinical Risk Management and Patient Safety, Tuscany Region, WHO Collaborating Centre, including the scientific collaboration of ISQua. IEA participates in WHO Decade of Patient Safety
As part of the role of official Non-State Actor with WHO, IEA was invited by Dr. Neelam Dhingra-Kumar to represent the human factors/ergonomics perspective at a three-day global consultation to kick off development of the Global Patient Safety Action Plan for “A Decade of Patient Safety: 2020-2030.”  The plan is a commitment from WHO, international health agencies, and Member States to organize and roll out definitive action to reduce the overall burden of patient harm due to unsafe health care and will be based on the guiding principles of equity, sustainability, and accountability.  

IEA Collaboration with International Labour Organization
IEA was asked by Dr. Shengli Niu of the International Labour Organization (ILO) to develop a collaborative document outlining “Principles and Guidelines for HF/E Design and Management of Work Systems.”  The document highlights the importance of HF/E in work systems and is under final review before being published on the IEA and ILO websites.  Watch for it soon… 

Recognizing Future Healthcare Leaders
The International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua) is seeking recommendations for early-career healthcare professionals who are budding leaders to present their innovative work on the main stage of ISQua’s 37th International Conference in Florence this year. Three successful presenters will be selected to join the stage with Dr. Trish Greenhalgh, an Internationally recognised academic in primary health care and implementation science. Please send your recommendations (you may self nominate) including the candidates’ short biography by mid-April to conference@isqua.org. 

HFE Women Award Nominations
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Women’s Organization for Mentorship and Networking (HFE WOMAN) is accepting nominations for its 2020 award, HFE Woman of the Year and HFE Mentor of the Year, through 5 June 5 2020. These awards are presented annually during the HFE WOMAN luncheon at the HFES annual meeting. More information about how to nominate can be found here.

MSD Prevention in the Paramedic Sector II: Launching a National Ambulance Design Standard
Join members of CRE-MSD, Canadian Institute for Safety, Wellness & Performance, CSA Group, Paramedic Chiefs of Canada, and the Paramedic Association of Canada for the launch of the new Ergonomic Design Standard for Ambulances and Related Equipment – CSA D500.CRE-MSD is pleased to offer this as a FREE event. Adverse Outcomes Associated with Occupational Exposures to Whole Body Vibration: Making a Health, Safety and Business Case
Presented by Dr. Peter Johnson, this webinar will demonstrate how adverse health and safety outcomes can result from occupational exposure to whole body vibration (WBV) and how methods to reduce WBV exposures can improve operator health and safety and company profitability. Registration is required to attend this free webinar.  

CHI 2020
The ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems will be held 25-30 April 2020 in Oahu, Hawai’i, USA. Registration is open. The current expectation is that CHI2020 will be held as planned. Any changes to the status of the conference will be updated on this website.

I hope this message finds you well. Much has happened since our last IEA NewsBrief in early March. Since the COVID-19 pandemic has reached all corners of the world, our IEA member societies have responded quickly. As many of you already know, several events scheduled to be held through the summer have been canceled or moved fully online. Please view our updated IEA website at https://iea.cc, with a special note from the IEA officers on behalf of the Executive Committee about how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted IEA activities.  Below are a few additional important announcements. COVID-19 RESPONSES 

Japan Human Factors and Ergonomics Society
The Japanese Human Factors and Ergonomics Society has launched a discussion on ergonomics strategic plans against COVID-19 outbreak. For more information about their activities, please read the message from Dr. Ryoji Yoshitake, President of JES.  

Chartered Institute for Ergonomics and Human FactorsThe Chartered Institute for Ergonomics and Human Factors has launched a podcast series in response to COVID-19. The first episode is focused on how to stay physically and mentally fit while working from home. Furthermore, on 31 March 2020, the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) asked CIEHF to produce guidance for manufacturers new to designing and building ventilators in a context that requires rapid turnaround. CIEHF welcomes contacts from any members of IEA societies who have specific expertise and knowledge connected to the design, testing, and usability of ventilators. To provide input, please contact Dr. Noorzaman Rashid at CIEHF (noorzaman.rashid@ergonomics.org.uk). More information about the CIEHF response to COVID-19 can be found here.  

Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of AustraliaIn the latest issue of HFESA Connect, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia’s president, Stephen Hehir, shared his response to the pandemic and issued a call for action among its members, particularly to update areas of specialization and for those with knowledge of pandemic response or organizational pandemic management to reach out. For more information about HFESA’s response, please send an email to secretariat@ergonomics.org.au . 

Human Factors and Ergonomics SocietyHFES recorded a townhall session organized around COVID-19, and moved its canceled Health Care Symposium to a first-ever virtualformat to be held 18-21 May 2020. More updates will be provided soon on their websiteRecent posts on the new, online community established for HFES members contain several discussions about COVID-19, including a post with several guidance documents: an overview of HF/E, reduction of stress and fatigue, disaster management, and communicating with the public. More information about these activities can be found in a message from Dr. M. Susan Hallbeck, President of HFES. 

International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua)The following is a special message from Dr. Peter Lachman, CEO of ISQua:            «As an international member based organisation, (the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua) has members in more than 80 countries that have been affected by the pandemic. We took action before most, and closed our office on March 13 to begin remote working in anticipation of the pending lockdown. This anticipatory action allowed us to adapt rapidly to the new world of remote working. We have set up a resource centre on our website for our members and others, and are running a series of webinars on COVID-19, starting with relaying the experience of our partners and members in Italy.            We are continuing our normal activities remotely but are redesigning part of our services for education and conferences, taking into account the need to change how we reach our members. Most importantly we are supporting our members where we can – be it in networking or providing up-to-date information about COVID-19 and how to respond. World Design OrganizationWDO, an international non-governmental organization and the international voice for industrial design, has launched a special initiative for Designing for COVID19. They advocate for Design for a Better World. Please check this initiative at https://wdo.org/covid19/

Fellow Award Nominations Invited
The due date for IEA Fellow Award nominations is 30 April 2020. The IEA Fellowship is given to recognize extraordinary or sustained, superior accomplishments of an individual. Please consider nominating deserving colleagues and HF/E professionals. Given these strange times in a changed world, it is more important than ever to recognize and acknowledge our leaders in the science and practice of HF/E.  

ACEAD SEANES 2020 Update
The call for papers for ACEAD SEANES 2020 has been extended to 20 April 2020. The 2020 Joint Conference of the Asian Council on Ergonomics and Design (ACED) and the Southeast Asian Network of Ergonomics Societies (SEANES) theme is “Convergence: Creating Ergonomic Breakthroughs Through Partnerships,” to be held 2-4 December 2020 in the Philippines.

HFES Summit: Guidelines for Safe and Healthy Work or School from Home
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) is producing a virtual one-day ergonomics summit to be held 15 April 2020 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (15:00-20:00 GMT). The summit will feature a group of seven renowned ergonomics experts who will provide state-of-the-art guidance for creating more comfortable, safer, and more productive home-based work and school environments. The registration fee for HFES members is $39.95 and for nonmembers is $59.95.   

The Joint CIEHF/ODAM 2020 Conference Goes Virtual
The virtual conference to be held 28-29 April 2020 will consist of presentations and discussions over two days in the form of interactive webinars, with slideshows, podcasts, and videos. Registration is open, and members of IEA Federated Societies receive a 20% discount off of the registration fee. Seminario Mejoras en la Actividad Laboral. La Experiencia Manufacturera

El viernes 17 de mayo se desarrolló el Seminario de Ergonomía, “Mejoras en la actividad laboral. La experiencia manufacturera”, en la Facultad de Arquitectura Urbanismo y Diseño, FAUD, de la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, organizado por las cátedras de Ergonomía y de Diseño Industrial IV y la Asociación de Ergonomía Argentina con la colaboración de la Secretaría de Extensión de dicha facultad.

Contó con la asistencia de más de 240 alumnos y egresados de la carrera
de Diseño Industrial, así como de docentes de la casa.

Ergonomía Argentina. Historia, miradas y aplicaciones

Primer libro nacional de Ergonomía.

La Asociación de Ergonomía Argentina publicó el primer libro nacional de Ergonomía. Un hito para la Ergonomía de la Argentina y para esta asociación.
El lector encontrará un recorrido histórico de casi 70 años, como así también las diferentes miradas y aplicaciones de esta joven ciencia, expresadas por más de veinte especialistas y referentes de la Ergonomía de nuestro país.

Su presentación se llevó a cabo en el VI Congreso Latinoamericano de Ergonomía, que se realizó el pasado 26 de noviembre de 2019 en la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires.

VI Congreso Latinoamericano de Ergonomía.

Congreso trianual, co organizado por ADEA (Asociación de Ergonomía Argentina) y AUDERGO (Asociación Uruguaya de Ergonomía). A realizarse en Buenos Aires, Argentina entre el 26 y el 29 de noviembre de 2019.
Los mayores exponentes de la Ergonomía Latinoamericana y autoridades de la IEA (Asociación Internacional de Ergonomía) se reúnen, para compartir con toda la comunidad el avance de la disciplina y, para rescatar y promover la historia de la ergonomía en el sur del continente.
Un comité científico formado por ergonomistas de primer nivel, de diferentes países de Latinoamérica, seleccionarán los trabajos científicos para contribuir a la publicación de nuevas investigaciones y a la generación de conocimientos.

Seminario de Ergonomía – Mejoras en la Actividad Laboral. La experiencia Manufacturera

El viernes 17 de mayo se desarrolló el Seminario de Ergonomía, “Mejoras en la actividad laboral. La experiencia manufacturera”, en la Facultad de Arquitectura Urbanismo y Diseño, FAUD, de la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, organizado por las cátedras de Ergonomía y de Diseño Industrial IV y la Asociación de Ergonomía Argentina con la colaboración de la Secretaría de Extensión de dicha facultad.

Concurrencia
Contó con la asistencia de más de 240 alumnos y egresados de la carrera de Diseño Industrial, así como de docentes de la casa.

Fue sumamente enriquecedor el diálogo entre los Diseñadores Industriales, Juan Virano y Gastón Luna y los Ergónomos Martín Rodríguez y Walter Amado, sobre temas como la relación entre la Ergonomía y el Diseño Industrial, así como también el futuro de ambas disciplinas.
Dentro de las actividades del seminario, participaron en un concurso Diseñadores Industriales con proyectos de diseño, fundamentarme del área de salud en los hospitales, siendo el jurado los ergónomos y el D.I. Iván Flucia. Los dos equipos ganadores, y las menciones de honor, van a participar en el VI Congreso Latinoamericano de Ergonomía, a desarrollarse en noviembre de este año en CABA.
La ADEA, agradece estas iniciativas de intercambio de ideas, experiencias, a la FAUD, y espera que este sea el comienzo de un mayor acercamiento con el ámbito académico.

Premio 3M IAS a la Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional

El Ing. Martín Rodríguez recibió el día martes 23 de noviembre el “Premio I.A.S. – 3M sobre SySO” – año 2019, en la Categoría “Higiene Industrial”.

La entrega del mismo fue efectuada en el Acto Celebratorio del “Día de la Higiene y Seguridad en el Trabajo de la República Argentina”, en el marco del CONGRESO NACIONAL SOBRE SEGURIDAD TOTAL.

REMINDER – IEA Liberty Mutual and Fellow Submissions for 2019

Greetings from IEA! On behalf of Yushi Fujita, Past President of IEA and chair of the Awards Standing Committee, we are writing to remind you that each year, IEA chooses new Fellows and selects the recipient(s) of the IEA/Liberty Mutual Medal.
The deadline for Federated Societies to nominate new Fellows is April 30. Applications for the IEA Liberty Mutual are due on May 31. Additional information can be found at:
Here is the information for the Liberty Mutual Medal, which includes a prize of $10,000 USD. This information also appears at:
Through this prestigious medal, the IEA seeks to recognize outstanding original research leading to the reduction or mitigation of work-related injuries. The main criteria include significant advancement of theory and understanding, innovation and development of new directions or approaches. The award recipient will receive a monetary award of $10,000. The monetary award is inclusive of funding for recipients to present their research in a special IEA/Liberty Mutual Lecture at the next IEA Triennial Congress.
Applicants need not belong to the IEA or any of its constituent groups. Relevant disciplines include ergonomics, epidemiology, biomechanics, cognitive and behavioural psychology, design, physiology, medical sciences, economics, engineering, etc.
Submission Requirements
To be considered for the Liberty Mutual Medal, the applicant must submit a letter of application and a research paper in the domain of accident prevention, injury reduction and/or early return to work, including rehabilitation. The paper must:
  • be scholarly in nature such as an original paper describing laboratory, field, or intervention research (see FAQ for further elaboration)
  • contain non-proprietary data
  • be unpublished at the time of submission or have been published within the previous calendar year
  • be thirty pages or less, single-spaced using 12 point font with 1 inch margins
The paper should address the following topics:
  • contributions of the research to theory, i.e., how the work advances the understanding of the causes of accidents and/or ability to mitigate occupational injuries or disability
  • aims of research
  • originality and creativity of the work
  • study methodology
  • implications for risk reduction
The cover letter should highlight:
  • main innovative aspects of the study (e.g., approach, methodology, analysis, etc.)
  • anticipated contribution to occupational safety
An international review committee, established by the IEA, will select the winning contribution.
The authors of an unpublished winning paper are expected to submit the paper to one of the IEA-endorsed scientific journals (see list on the IEA website, here). All recipients of the IEA/Liberty Mutual Medal are invited and expected to present their research in a special IEA/Liberty Mutual Lecture at the next IEA Triennial Congress, using part of the monetary award for travel to the Congress.
Persons wishing to be considered for the medal should submit an application, including a separate cover letter and the paper in electronic format, to the IEA Awards Committee Chair, the IEA Vice President/Secretary General, and the IEA Secretariat at the following addresses:
The deadline for receipt of applications is May 31 every year. Applicants will be notified of the results by mid-July. Announcement of the award winner will be made public in August.
